What is a shipping chokepoint?

A shipping chokepoint is a narrow stretch of water that a large share of global seaborne trade has no practical way to avoid — a strait or canal so geographically pinched that traffic must funnel through it, giving it outsized leverage over the flow of goods and energy. Because there is no cheap alternative route, anything that slows or stops traffic at a chokepoint ripples outward into freight rates, insurance costs, delivery times, and the trade balances of the countries that depend on it.

That leverage is exactly why chokepoints are worth watching as a data series. A single passage can gate a fifth of the world's oil or the entire fastest route between two continents. When the number of ships passing through one changes materially, it is one of the earliest hard signals that global trade conditions are shifting — earlier than the trade statistics, which arrive weeks or months later.

The reason a chokepoint leads the official data is timing. Customs figures, trade balances, and shipping-line financials are compiled and published on a lag measured in weeks to months. Vessels, by contrast, either pass through a strait today or they do not, and that fact is observable the same week. So when a disruption forces ships to reroute, wait, or turn back, the transit count registers it almost immediately, while the economic consequences — higher freight costs, delayed cargo, squeezed importers — are still working their way toward the statistics that will eventually confirm them. Watching the passage is watching the cause before the effect is measured.

Which five do we track, and why?

We track the five passages that carry the most consequence for global trade and energy — the ones where a disruption is felt worldwide, not just locally. Each plays a distinct role:

  • Strait of Hormuz — the single most important oil chokepoint on earth. Roughly 20% of the world's seaborne crude, plus a large share of LNG, transits this narrow passage out of the Persian Gulf. There is no meaningful pipeline bypass for most of that volume, which is why a Hormuz disruption moves the global oil price directly.
  • Suez Canal — the artery of Asia–Europe trade. Ships routing between Asian manufacturing and European markets use Suez to avoid the long haul around the southern tip of Africa; when they can't, that detour adds thousands of miles and weeks of transit.
  • Panama Canal — the shortcut between the Americas and Asia, linking the Atlantic and Pacific. It carries a heavy flow of US agricultural exports, container traffic, and energy cargoes, and it is uniquely sensitive to drought, since its locks run on fresh water.
  • Bab el-Mandeb — the southern approach to Suez, the strait between the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. Almost everything that transits Suez between Asia and Europe must first pass Bab el-Mandeb, which makes it the leading indicator for the whole Asia–Europe route.
  • Strait of Malacca — the spine of intra-Asian trade, connecting the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea. An enormous share of the region's manufacturing inputs, energy imports, and finished goods pass through it, making it the busiest of the five by vessel count.

Between them, these five gate the majority of the trade flows that a global supply-chain shock would travel through. Watching all five together tells you whether stress is isolated to one route or spreading across the map.

How is chokepoint stress measured?

Chokepoint stress is measured as the trailing-30-day mean of daily vessel transits divided by the trailing-365-day mean, expressed as a percentage deviation. A reading of 0% means traffic is running exactly at its one-year norm; −40% means it is running at 60% of normal; +5% means slightly busier than usual. It is a simple, comparable "how far from normal is this passage right now?" number, and the same formula runs on all five.

The transit counts come from AIS — the Automatic Identification System, the transponder signal ships broadcast for collision avoidance. Aggregated at a passage, AIS gives a clean daily count of how many vessels actually went through, sourced via IMF PortWatch. The series updates daily with roughly a four-day lag, so a snapshot reflects transits through about four days earlier. Comparing a 30-day window against a full-year baseline is deliberate: it filters out the noise of any single quiet or busy day and surfaces sustained shifts — the kind that actually move freight and insurance markets — rather than daily wiggle.

The full-year denominator does one more useful thing: it neutralises seasonality. Every passage has an annual rhythm — monsoon patterns, harvest cycles, holiday demand — and if you compared this week only to recent weeks, you would mistake a predictable seasonal lull for a shock. Averaging across a trailing 365 days folds the seasonal pattern into the baseline, so the deviation you read approximates "abnormal versus normal" rather than "off-season versus peak." The result is a single, seasonally-fair percentage per passage that means the same thing whatever the month.

What do the numbers look like today?

As of the July 24, 2026 snapshot, stress is concentrated in one passage. Four of the five chokepoints are within a few points of their one-year norm; the Strait of Hormuz is a dramatic outlier:

Hormuz running 60.6% below its one-year norm is a major dislocation in the world's most important oil chokepoint, while Suez, Panama, and Bab el-Mandeb are all slightly above normal and Malacca is essentially flat. That pattern — one passage severely stressed, the rest calm — tells you the disruption is specific to the Gulf oil route rather than a broad global-trade slowdown. What are the limits of AIS transit counts?

AIS transit counts are a powerful early signal, but they measure observed vessel passages, not intent or cause — and reading them well means respecting three limits.

First, AIS can be incomplete. Transponders can be switched off, spoofed, or lost to gaps in satellite coverage, and vessels sometimes "go dark" precisely in tense or sanctioned waters. That means a falling transit count can partly reflect ships that are still moving but no longer broadcasting, not only ships that have genuinely stopped. The signal is strong, but it is a signal about what we can see.

Second, the count does not explain itself. A drop can be caused by conflict, rerouting around a threat, insurers pulling cover, a collapse in demand, seasonal maintenance, or any mix of those. The transit series tells you that traffic changed and by how much; it does not tell you why. That causal layer belongs to the newswire and to judgement, and we are careful not to dress a count up as an explanation.

Third, there is a lag, and it is not a market. The four-day update cadence makes this a fast macro series, but it is not real-time, so the snapshot date — not today's date — is the right reference point. And a chokepoint reading is one input into a wider picture: commodity prices, freight and insurance rates, and the external balances of the countries downstream of the passage. It is context and an early indicator, not investment advice or a trade on its own.

There is also a subtler limit: a chokepoint tells you about flow, not about what is flowing. A transit count treats a laden crude tanker and a half-empty container ship the same way — as one vessel. Most of the time that is fine, because sustained changes in vessel numbers track changes in cargo well enough to be useful. But it means the series is a proxy for trade volume, not a direct measure of it, and a shift in the mix of vessel types or load factors can move the count without moving the underlying tonnage by the same amount. This is why we treat the number as an early indicator to be corroborated, not as a settled fact about how much cargo crossed.
